Rock-tober 01, 2014

To kick off Rock-tober 2014, I wanted something loud, bold, and brassy. AC/DC was the natural choice as they also led the charge for the now classic and critically acclaimed series Rock-tober 2013. Choosing the leadoff song, that was a little harder - AC/DC's singles library is massive.

AC/DC - in technical parlance these stand for Alternating Current and Direct Current, the two primary modes of transmitting electricity. AC/DC, the band, wanted you to know they were a powerhouse. Just to remove any hint of ambiguity, they stuck a lightning bolt in the middle of their band name. AC/DC is in the Old Guard of rock and roll, and they continue to release new material, most recently this year with Rock or Bust. Imagine that, real rock and roll in the new millenium.

This Aussie band formed in 1973 and jelled a year later with the addition of Scottish born frontman, Bon Scott. They released 7 albums together before Scott's death in 1980. Immediately after, the surviving members contemplated turning out the lights. Thankfully, they reconsidered, added Brian Johnson to the lineup, and went on to release 10 more albums - so far.

I finally selected "Thunderstruck", from the album, The Razor's Edge, released in 1990. The initial guitar riff grabs your attention, then comes the driving drum beat, and the next thing you know, you're yelling "Thunder!". It'll get your blood pumping and throw that aggressive "take no prisoners" switch in your brain. If the song comes on while I'm driving the 'stang, do us both a favor and get out my way.
